F1 Blog’s Malaysia Predictions

Carrot’s Predictions

  • Malaysia Grand Prix 2011 Winner – Sebastian Vettel.
  • Malaysia Grand Prix 2011 Pole Position – Sebastian Vettel.
  • Malaysia Grand Prix 2011 Fastest Lap – Sebastian Vettel.
  • Other predictions – At least one of the Hispanias not to qualify due to the 107% rule.

The story of the first two sessions of the weekend in Malaysia is that of form. Mercedes appear to be level with Ferrari, although it’s hard to discern with the Scuderia’s race prep heavy running. McLaren are looking good if you look at the times, but the on track effort speaks volumes, Red Bull aren’t even trying and Vettel can stay within a couple of tenth of Mark Webber with ease which is why I’m going for a complete sweep this weekend by the young German. However it’s likely to rain during the race, and rain hard. In such conditions you’d be an idiot not to acknowledge the wet weather prowess of the McLaren pairing of Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button. It’s between the Red Bull and McLaren drivers this weekend, it all depends on how the RB7 deals with the temperatures (due to tyre degradation) and the rain, if it gets it right, expect Red Bull dominance again. The Hispanias are looking faster with their much trumpeted new front wing, however they’ve become extremely fragile, both cars developed reliability problems today. With the possibility of wet weather either the McLaren or Red Bull tacticians must be considering sacrificing a set of option tyres in the first part of qualifying to remove to potential hazards on Sunday.

Mark’s Predictions

  • Malaysia Grand Prix 2011 Winner – Sebatian Vettel.
  • Malaysia Grand Prix 2011 Pole Position – Lewis Hamilton.
  • Malaysia Grand Prix 2011 Fastest Lap – Lewis Hamilton.

Once again I expect Red Bull and McLaren to battle it out up front and wouldn’t be surprised to see these four cars making up the first four places on the grid.

Euan’s Predictions

  • Malaysia Grand Prix 2011 Winner – Jenson Button.
  • Malaysia Grand Prix 2011 Pole Position – Mark Webber.
  • Malaysia Grand Prix 2011 Fastest Lap – Sebastian Vettel.
  • Other predictions – Michael Schumacher has put in some fast laps in qualifying – could he be back on the podium for the first time in his return to F1?

The practice sessions have thrown up some very interesting results so anything could happen this weekend. However, Red Bull will undoubtedly be leading the way once again, and similarly Mclaren and Ferrari will be looking to challenge them. Ferarri will hope to be better after a slightly disappointing start to the season in Australia, meanwhile McLaren will not want to let Red Bull slip away again from the very start of the Grand Prix. I think we could see a bit of an upset, especially if it rains, with Jenson Button out-racing the Red Bulls to claim the top step of the podium. I can’t see Hispania qualifying again despite their new wing, with Malaysia, as Narain Karthikeyan has said, being one of the hardest tracks for this.
